Professor Malcolm Harper of Cranfield University UK delivered a lecture on 'Micro-finance in India and Pakistan: some comparisons' here at the GC University Lahore.

The varsity's department of Economics organised the lecture. Professor Malcolm said the extent of poverty was high in India and around one million people in Mumbai lived on sidewalks.

He shed light on various probable aspects of micro finance mobility in India and Pakistan besides elaborating its worth for social uplift. He made a comparison between Pakistan and India on the basis of micro finance penetration and said there was a large room to develop micro finance in Pakistan.

He stressed micro finance should not be seen either as an end in itself or a prescription for poverty eradication - rather it was a process of social change. He further said there were some very important factors, which distinguished micro-finance from traditional banking and indeed from traditional poverty alleviation finance.

Earlier, vice-chancellor GC University Professor Dr Khalid Aftab thanked the guest for disseminating knowledgeable information to the students pertaining to various aspects of micro-finance.
